Japan

My parents are on their way to Japan for 10 days this morning. They are going with a group of people from Phoenix on a Sister Cities program. There is a fairly large group going, but within the group there is an official delegation, those representing Phoenix and therefore meeting with the mayors of cities, etc. My father is one of the official delegates, which translates into my father and mother being able to do some really interesting things above and beyond the normal group. I am excited for them.

My father works for a Japanese company and has been to Japan a few times, but never on leisure and never long enough to really experience anything other than meetings and the occasional bar. He told me this morning that this is the first time in a long time that he has really looked forward to a trip. I am so happy for him. When I was a kid he sacrificed his hard earned time off to take us to see our grandparents or other relatives. We rarely took a vacation that was not either family or work related. He is 60 years old, it is high time that he enjoy himself.

My mother is a bit anxious about the trip, but I think she will get comfortable once she is in the situation. Her two biggest fears at the moment: sushi and a spa. She has never tried sushi, I tried to recommend she try the rolls, as they are less “raw fish” in your mouth feeling. The spa isn’t so easy to get around – it is coed and N-A-K-E-D! It is an ancient healing gardens, sounds really neat…until you get to the nudity issue. We will see how that goes.

I can’t wait to see pictures and hear stories about their adventure.
