Tire Woes, Take 2

So I took my car with the injured tire to Firestone after work on Wednesday, they said they had a tire for $144. Fabulous. I took it in Thursday for the repair. After work on Thursday I went to pick it up, Mr. Mechanic said, “No charge.”

I looked at him like he had a second head suddenly pop out of his neck and said, “What?!”

He said, “The tire was fine.”

Being the genius that I am, I said, “That was the spare on it” (I am sure his 20 years in the automotive repair business hadn’t clued him into that, especially since the wheel my spare is on is bright yellow.)

To which he replied, “No, the tire in your trunk, the screw hadn’t punctured it.”

They even put the good (original) tire on at no charge.

First I was elated that I wasn’t out the extra $144, then I got mad; that means that the dealership was scamming me at worst, lazy at best. Either one is not acceptable. They charged me $25 for putting the spare on that didn’t need to be put on, but worse, they wanted me to buy at tire for $271(tire alone, not including labor)!!! They claimed the tire was not repairable. The tire wasn’t flat when I took it in; I saw the screw in the tire and was trying to be proactive.

I spoke to the service manager this morning, she said she would “look into it”, code for “give me some time to make up an excuse.” Surprisingly she called back, but I missed the call and have call back into her. I hope she does the right thing, refunds my money, gives me an assurance that nothing like this will happen again and makes a note on my account that I am to receive excellent service, but if not I will not hesitate to take it to the general manager, and if that doesn’t work to corporate and report them to the BBB, this just isn’t right.

By the way on the Firestone receipt it even says, “Screw did not puncture tire, no need for replacement.” Pretty damning evidence if I do say so myself.

Edit: 3:39pm Just spoke to the service manager, after a bit of a song and dance she admitted that the technician had not taken the wheel apart to look closer, so he did not know that the wheel wasn't punctured. They are refunding me the money for mounting the spare and gave me the assurance that nothing like this will ever happen again. Here's hoping that is true!
