Planes, rings and mojitos

Well kiddies, we are back from St Thomas.

We had a wonderful vacation, but it started off bumpy:
Saturday 3/3: Flight out of Roanoke was delayed. Crunched the numbers, we wouldn’t make our flight to St Thomas. Called the airline, talked to very helpful CSR who tried every airline on the east coast, there was nothing until Sunday. I was upset at first, but then it gave us a day to do nothing at home, no one knew we were there so the phone didn’t ring. Turned out to not be so bad.

Sunday: Travel went off smoothly. We got to the hotel about one hour before check-in time, the room wasn’t ready, so we walked around. Came back to the desk and asked the status of our room, the girl behind the desk looked a little confused and made a call. She said it would be a few minutes more and she would find us. We went to the hotel bar and had our first tropical drink. Yum! She found us, apologized for the delay, gave us a room upgrade (to an ocean view, which would have cost about $90/day), plus a free dinner in the nice restaurant in the hotel. (Which wound up being our tastiest meal.)

Monday: We had our massages and took a sky trolley to the top of a mountain to see a wonderful view of many islands, including Puerto Rico. We had dinner at a restaurant that was highly recommended in all the guidebooks and websites. It was ok, but it wasn’t worth the praise or the price. Afterwards C suggested taking a walk barefoot on the beach, still in our dress clothes. When we got to the end she proposed! She gave me a ring that had been her mothers and said, “This isn’t how I wanted to do it, you know too much about my finances to let me buy you a ring on my own. This is your temporary ring, I want us to pick one out together.” I cried. We kissed. It was beautiful.

Tuesday: We went shopping in downtown Charl0tte Am@lie. Almost every shop was a jewelry shop, if it wasn’t, it sold alcohol. We bought both. We bought my “real” engagement ring. It isn’t a traditional one stone in the middle ring; instead there is a cluster of 7 (small) diamonds in the center in an oval raised a bit above a triangle on either side with 3 diamonds in white gold. I will get the original ring sized and wear it on my right hand. I am so happy that we bought it with money we had, we didn’t finance it or put it on a credit card. I keep starring at it. I know we have been together for 5 years, but wow, I am engaged.

Wednesday: We went to Coral World – they have the neatest attraction where you take steps down under the water and you see all sorts of fish, sea turtles, etc. The neatest part is that none of them is captive; they can come and go as they please, they tend to stay in the area, because they are fed. There was also a stingray exhibit, C fed one! She expected it to be firm, but it was pretty squishy – it came up on the side of the tank and she had to peel back its nose to get to its mouth. It was really neat! We had our free dinner that night – it was FABULOUS.

Thursday: We took the ferry over to St John to go snorkeling. It was a lot of fun, we saw all sorts of tropical fish. C now wants to buy fins and a mask. I don’t know where she will snorkel around here…maybe the bathtub!

Friday: We checked out of the hotel with a nice surprise. We booked the room under a deal that the 3rd and 6th nights were free, but as we missed the first night, we only stayed 5 and therefore only the 3rd night should have been free. Instead when she handed me the bill we were only charged for 3 nights! Can’t complain there.

So many things financially worked out for us on this trip. First C’s mom paid the money she owed us before we left, the upgraded room (that I originally didn’t book due to the cost), free dinner, buying my engagement ring at deep discount Caribbean prices and not having to finance one at home and only being charged for three nights.

It was a fantastic trip. We relaxed, we played, we had quality time. Vacations are definitely going to be something I do not ignore anymore.

Now to plan the honeymoon….
